Research FAQs

What is undergraduate research?

As defined by the Council on Undergraduate Research, research is “[a]n inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline.” The Center encourages undergraduate students to pursue research experiences individually, with a faculty mentor, and/or outside of the Georgetown community.

Why participate in undergraduate research?

Participating in a research experience will enhance your educational experience, further your knowledge of a topic that most interests you, and connect you with faculty mentors and the greater Georgetown community. In addition, your research can help prepare you for graduate school, the workplace, or strengthen your application for a competitive fellowship, award, or scholarship.

Can any student participate in undergraduate research?

Absolutely! Any student can participate in self-directed research. Undergraduate research isn’t limited to Juniors or Seniors, or restricted to a certain major. Many research experiences are available, and we encourage you to pursue your research interests.

Does the Center directly match me with a research position or project?

The Center for Research and Fellowships does not directly match students with a certain position or project. However, we provide undergraduate students with information needed to find a research experiences or mentors, in addition to advising the student on how to approach a potential faculty mentor.
