James Madison Fellowships

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 for the purpose of improving teaching about the U.S. Constitution in secondary schools. James Madison Fellows are expected to complete either a Master of Arts (MA), a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), or a Master of Education (MEd) with an emphasis on American history, government, political science, or other relevant concentrations. Fellows must be dedicated to teaching at the secondary level. Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, but will not exceed $12,000 per year for two years.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals.
• Applicants must be a teacher or plan to become a teacher of American history, government, or social studies at the secondary level. (Fellows are required to teach secondary school for one academic year upon completion of the degree program).
• Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree by August 31 of the competition year

Application Process

Deadline: Early March 2022

Late March: The Fellows Selection Committee meets to recommend the appointment of Fellows to the Foundation.

Late April/Early May: Fellows are named by the Foundation and notified of their selection
