Frequently Asked Questions

How Should I Get Started?

RESEARCH: Spend some time researching and thinking about the countries and grant awards that most interest you. This is REALLY important because a thoughtful application will demonstrate clearly why (with specific detail!) you are enthusiastic about the host country — both for the grant activity itself, as well as living and engaging more generally.

REFLECT: Think deeply about the experiences you’ve had so far in your life, the knowledge and skills you’ve developed, and the opportunities you hope to have in the future that motivate and prepare you for a Fulbright grant.

CANVAS COURSE: Visit our center’s Fulbright Canvas course.

Can I apply through Georgetown University and work with the Center for Research & Fellowships on my application if I already graduated with my degree from Georgetown?

Yes! If you have already received a degree from Georgetown University, please list “Georgetown University, DC” as your “Selected School” in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program application portal.

Note: If you received a degree from Georgetown University and subsequently enrolled in/graduated from another degree program at a different institution, please find your Fulbright Program Advisor at that institution, which will be your affiliation. You may also apply At Large if that institution does not have an FPA.

I am a currently enrolled degree student at Georgetown. Should I also list “Georgetown University, DC” as my “Selected School?”

Yes! The Center for Research & Fellowships works with undergraduate students who will “have a conferred bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the start of the [Fulbright] grant period” and currently enrolled graduate students.

If I received a certificate, but not a degree, from Georgetown University, can I still list Georgetown as my institution?

No. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program does not allow applicants to apply through institutions from which they did not receive a degree. If you received a certificate, but not a degree, at Georgetown, please apply either At Large or through whatever institution from which you received your most recent degree.

How do I research eligibility and requirements for the program?

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program’s general eligibility and ineligibility requirements are listed on the website. If a question remains after reading this general information, you can always email fulbright@georgetown.edu for further guidance.

In addition to the general requirements, each award type in a country has a landing page that lists the requirements for that particular award (for example, the Open Study/Research Award in South Africa or the English Teaching Assistant Award in Brazil.) It is very important to review closely the specific requirements.

Can I still apply through Georgetown University if I miss the campus deadline of September 1, 2026 at 12 PM (NOON) ET?

YES! Georgetown-affiliated applicants wishing to take part in Georgetown’s campus committee review and mentorship process must LOCK their completed draft applications in the Fulbright application portal by Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 12 PM (NOON) ET. All recommendations and evaluations are due at this time as well. (Please plan ahead and give recommenders and language evaluators as much time as possible!)

However, if you do not apply by Georgetown’s internal September deadline, you can still list “Georgetown University, DC” as your “Selected School.” In this case, you won’t participate in Georgetown’s campus committee review and mentorship process, but you must still submit your completed application by Fulbright’s October 6, 2026, 5 PM ET, national deadline.

What happens if I submit an incomplete application or all of my required recommendations/evaluations are not in by September 1?

The Center for Research & Fellowships reserves the right to not match with a campus mentor applicants who lock incomplete draft applications by the September 1 internal due date.

Affiliation Support Letter

Request an Affiliation Support Letter from the Center for Research & Fellowships to share with an individual or organization in the host country who might be willing to serve as your research affiliation during the Fulbright grant year.

This letter should be requested after you have made initial contact with the individual or organization, and they are seeking more information about what a research host affiliation involves.
