GUROP Fellowship Grants May be Taxable

The fact that a GUROP Fellowship grant, or at least a portion thereof, may be taxable should not discourage any student from applying. The opportunity is valuable in many ways. Furthermore, fellowship grants used to pay for educational expenses (i.e., tuition, books, and required fees), if documented, may not be taxable. You will not receive a W-2 or MISC 1098 or MISC 1099 for your summer research award. For more information regarding the taxability of your award, please see IRS Publication 970 – Tax Benefits for Education (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p970.pdf). Georgetown’s Tax Department advises awardees also to consult a tax adviser when it is time to file income taxes.
