George J. Mitchell Scholarship
The George J. Mitchell Scholarships were founded in honor of former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell who helped broker the historic peace accord in Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarship program seeks to foster ties between the US and Ireland by sponsoring post-baccalaureate study at any Irish university. Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service.
Mitchell Scholars may study any academic discipline offered in a degree or certificate program at one of eleven institutions of higher learning in Ireland. This includes the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland, two institutes in Dublin, and two universities in Northern Ireland (Queen’s University Belfast and the Ulster University).
Candidates do not need to apply separately to the graduate programs in Ireland.
- US Citizen
- No GPA minimum; however, applicants must have a 3.7+ to be considered for university nomination, and 3.8+ is considered competitive
- Current senior
To apply for a Mitchell Scholarship students must first receive internal nomination from Georgetown. The internal application consists of the following:

Your application for institutional endorsement must be submitted as ONE Word or pdf document to firstname.lastname@example.org by the internal nomination deadline (Summer 2021). A complete application will consist of the following components arranged in this order:
- This application form
- Two short essay responses
- Resume (no more than two pages)
In addition, by this deadline four recommenders must separately email their letters to email@example.com.
